Would appreciate any recommendations for a nice hotel close to the SanJuan airport. Will be spending one night on our way to the
BVI. Thanks.

Courtyard by the airport is decent and very convenient. On the beach and has a pool. The airport hotel is doable but not very nice. We have used it when we get in late and leave early for Tortola.

As previously mentioned, there's a hotel inside the airport terminal - basic accommodations.
Embassy Suites is just a few minutes taxi ride from the airport - - it's the closest "off airport" hotel and only a 2 1/2 block walk to a very nice beach.
Other hotels within a 8 to 12 minute taxi ride from the airport are (listed in no particular order):
The Courtyard by Marriott
The Ritz-Carlton
Fairmont El San Juan
Hampton Inn & Suites
Royal Sonesta San Juan
San Juan Water & Beach Club Hotel
Check out their respective websites then select the one that best fits your budget and "hotel" travel style.

The San Juan Airport Hotel has improved, but it is in an old unused terminal. You'll walk past sleeping homeless in the morning.

Jumping in late on this thread - If you are looking for more upscale, The Condado Vanderbilt is about 15 minute taxi and is on the beach. And, they sometimes have good late minute deals if you find yourself stuck getting in or out of SJU. https://www.condadovanderbilt.com
