I am not quite sure why you are asking about a sim card. USVI is part of the USA network. Cell phone rates and service are no different than if you were still in the states. I could be wrong but I have ATT service and there was never anything different with my bill when on St. John. Connections and service was great, just as if I was standing next door to my neighbor back in PA. Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix - none are "international". If you plan to visit the BVI, Tortola, Jost, that's a different story and those calls are considered international ones.

not yet, we heard rumors of Verizon getting a tower, but at this point Verizon is roaming. Go by a $20 AT&T go phone at Walmart.

i'm asking about a sim card because I have Verizon and it is $1.99 per minute + roaming charges to call back to the U.S. and/or make local phone call while in St. Thomas. I usually get a local sim card when going to other places in the caribe and wasn't for sure if St Thomas was a US network. So now that I know it is AT&T . . . Does that mean if i buy one of those walmart go phones it won't cost me anything to make call back to the US or local calls within St. Thomas? Thank you.

I am interested in this also. I have Verizon at home so can't use my usual phone but will have a unlocked phone that I use when on other islands. I will be in St Martin prior to STT so can we get a cheap sim card for while we are in STT? Thanks!

I don't know why you all don't just come over from the dark side and get with AT&T! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />

I think it's because in 'Big America', as you call it, Verizon is kind of the leader... <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

I don't know, Carol. I have never had any trouble with my AT&T when I travel. Maybe I just haven't found Verizon country. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Wink.gif" alt="" />

Gee - you learn something new every day. I never realized that different carriers had different determinations of "international" calls and rates. I just assumed Verizon, Sprint, At&T, etc. would all consider USVI domestic calls.

Verizon doesn't have a presence here. As sail2wind said, there are rumors they are building some sort of system, but for now, it is very expensive to roam. We have friends who spend big chunks of time here and they get go-phones (?) or some sort of modem deal from AT&T. Sprint is also a local provider, but depending on your location, can have poor coverage.

Nutmeg~

So still have the question of a place to get a cheap sim card while on island for my unlocked phone. I am not changing over to AT&T at this time so that is not an option...I have a phone for in SXM that uses Chippie...looking for a cheap sim card for the week. Thanks!

Does Radio Shack carry that sort of thing? They are located at Buccaneer Mall across from Havensight and Nisky Center toward the airport.

Here is a link to the ATT Go Phone rates. You can buy the sim card at Wal Mart for 9.99. St Thomas, St John are part of the one rate program. Just like state to state.

Thanks Nutmeg... all new to me also! I am totally Tech dummy. I have an unlocked phone I am taking to SXM and will purchase a Chippie card for use while there. Would like to use that phone on STT also as I have Verizon in the US. Sounds like Chippe won't work on STT but that I can get a card here in the States at Walmart and hope it will work in STT...that is what I am getting from this conversation...if not I hope someone will correct me.

Whether you get a card or go phone they should work. Verizon is supposedly putting their first tower out by the Marriott is STT. Not up yet, at least last week.
