Apparently the Miami to SXM AA flight blew a tire upon landing. My guess is that they don't have a suitable tire here? Supposedly there is an AA plane coming in from Miami, supposed to land around 10 PM tonight and take back off at 10:45 tonight. It will be a long day for a lot of people, and a late night getting home!

I’d be unhappy too, but not a lot of blame to go around with things like that. As they say, things happen.

Agree that a blown tire is nobody's fault, but Miami is a major American hub- wouldn't you think they'd keep some spare parts around?

this was Miami to SXM. So yes they probably have spare tires in Miami but they still have to get it to SXM.

Oh man, we've been on AA2219 several times. That 4:08 departure is now 11:43.
Lots of missed connections tonight. frown

Gate arrival in MIA was 02:32, essentially 7 hours late. After clearing Immigration and Customs, 03:00 - 03:30 at a minimum. Anyone dependent on AA for a room, transportation, and meals has my sympathy.

If I were on that flight I would have rebooked with AA via cellphone, left SXM, had a nice but early dinner, and returned to SXM later. I would also have booked my own hotel room In MIA and eaten the cost - airline rooms aren't always in a hotel where I want to stay, and some are at best described as grim.

Meal vouchers are minimal at best. Transportation vouchers may be more worthwhile. If I could get the vouchers issued in SXM then they might be worth using. If I had to stand in line in MIA to get the vouchers then the potential to get some sleep time is worth more to me than the time to get the vouchers, and I’ll pay my own way.

I heard the plane leave here around 11:45, which is an hour later than what I originally heard. Can't imagine being on that flight myself, considering that's the flight we're on, on Monday! ...and we have a 3.5 hour drive home from Miami. The original plane is still here this morning. Since the problem was on landing, I imagine everyone who had a car had already turned their car in. I probably would have gotten a cab and gone somewhere though. Tough night for those folks.

It really sucks when that type of thing happens but people need to get a grip! It’s not like the airline planned for this to happen, and they dealt with it as best they could. No way they could stockpile one of every airplane part (or as was the case in this instance - every tire) for every plane that flies in and out of SXM.

Yes, people were inconvenienced and we all grouse about that when it happens but hopefully, by now everyone is where they need to be and probably already busy writing their complaint letters to the airline. Go to it and I hope they treat you well......

I would almost bet this wasn't the first flight of the day, but even if it was, don't they check these planes? Low air in a tire would cause blow-out upon impact. Or does AA just land then take off again without re checking a plane? Once on a USAir flight the plane came in from elsewhere and our boarding was delayed because the plane check revealed just that---low tire pressure, so we waited while it was corrected.

I'm mildly amused that the ferry flight of the repaired aircraft from SXM to MIA took 20 minutes less than the delayed passenger flight on the replacement aircraft. Why, I don't know. Could have been weather/winds, could have been that the ferry flight was empty, with no pax, no luggage, and perhaps only a wheel with a blown tire and some mechanic's tools as freight.

Winds always affect flying time, depending on whether it's a head wind or a tail wind..

I completely agree. Having been in a similar situation last December, when our flight was delayed over six hours leaving SXM, we unfortunately trusted the airline to provide us reasonable accommodations. We were bused from MIA to Homestead at 2 AM, to stay in a fleabag motel. Weather in CLT further delayed us another two days, which of course, AA refused to accept as their problem. In the future we'll make our own arrangements.

Funny thing, I'm associated with an smaller airport in New Haven CT. American has 3 flights a day to PHL, 1 a week to CLT. They actually store tires for the equipment they fly with us in case of such a situation. You would think with a busier schedule in SXM and much further distance, they'd do the same there.
