Looking for some advice/thoughts. I am the consummate Spirit Air detractor(including previously in this very thread), but I now find myself considering their flights for Christmas. I just checked Delta and the cost would be significantly more than Spirit. Spirit doesn't offer 1st class, but we would just get the big front seat option.

Then put a roll of duct tape in your carry on to help hold the plain together. Lol

Doesn't Spirit still only do one flight to SXM a week? If yuor flight out of DTW has a weather delay and you miss your connection you are lost. Have you checked United or American? We fly United in March.

We have been going to St. Maarten since 1995, and bought a Time Share at Divi, just before Louis. But back then we had a charter company from Detroit to SXM, and our flights costs $400 ea. We have watched the costs climb over the years, and of course expected that, but last year we paid $780 each on AA, as opposed to the $1069 they are asking this year. And the Delta prices are outrageous. And yes, Carol, I did try United, which was cheaper by a couple hundred, if I wanted to stay overnight in either Newark or Chicago. But if I didn't, it was the same RT price as AA. If your TS at Divi is Saturday to Saturday, check with DIVI about adding on a day then fly Sunday to Sunday. We've done that in the past and cost of room is far less than what the Saturday flights cost. I think airlines know lots of TS run Sat/sat and jack up Saturday fares.

I would be VERY, VERY cautious about booking Spirit over Christmas. Everything that CAN go wrong over Christmas WILL go wrong, and you could be spending your whole holiday in airports. Planes are jammed full, every one, so if you miss a connection, you could be totally screwed. And as Leagle pointed out, they only have one flight per week. It wouldn't be prudent..

Thanks for talking this through with me. We're going to look at different carriers.
Carol, you echo exactly what my wife said.

Quick update. I bought tickets this morning. DTW First Class for Christmas holiday trip. DTW to ATL to SXM. My layover in ATL is very long--over night. We're planning to just get a hotel in ATL. I think it'll be a nice trip, we'll just go to dinner and have a leisurely night and not have to wake up at 3:00am like we usually do when leaving from DTW and arriving SXM same day. I got an incredible deal too--it was half the price, so I saved $3000.00.
Now I have to find a place to stay.

Worst scenario is they have to get credit for a future flight if ticket is nonrefundable if they can't find accommodations.

Carol, I guess I could have been more clear. I have a condo on hold. Owner agreed to save the dates. I'll can complete the transaction soon, or; I also found availability at PalmCourt so I only need to make a decision. The situation isn't as dire as I indicate, I guess. Any thoughts on Palm Court?

Oh, ok. Regarding Palm Court, it literally just reopened after Irma probably a month ago so it should be in good shape. Probably they don't have a full kitchen though, if that is important? We cook in a LOT, so that is very important to me. Depends also on what the amenities are at the condo, like many have a washer and some even have a dryer in the unit, which is a great amenity to me. Often you can get many more amenities in a condo than in a hotel, for the same price, or less. For me, I could care less about hotel 'stuff' like a front desk, etc. Other people like those things. One thing that I found in the Orient Village area that is fairly unusual in condos apparently is US TV. I don't have any idea whether this is important to you or not. If you don't mind posting which condo you are considering, some people here might have some insight into it.
