The good news for your friend is that it's a mechanical issue so at least the airline has to pick up the tab. If it was a weather related delay - chaching, chaching.....the bucks on you.
It always sounds good to get to stay on the airlines dime but they usually keep you at the airport until it's too late to really enjoy the extra time and then you have to reclaim luggage and rebook after all that waiting, and then there are the minor little details to deal with - changing airport rides and connections back home not to mention explaining to the boss how you had no other choice but to stay longer, to mention but a few........
