I usually find that it's cheapest to buy a SIM from a local provider (eg Digicel) rather than use my US provider's (AT&T) international plans.
If you do want to do that you need to make sure your phone is UNLOCKED and works on Digicels GSM network, I believe that's the 900/1800 MHZ bands but check for yourself as I'm no expert in that field.
