That is why we carry some clothes and essentials in a carry on bag...enough for a couple of days.
As we did when we checked bags years ago. It's still a pain to deal with lost or delayed luggage. It's also great to exit the airport quickly without waiting for checked baggage, which may or may not have made the connection.
