There isn't much information to go on here, but I would think the medical professionals who treated your friends would have thoughts. What did they say it is? The principle of Occam's razor does come to mind though... blistering skin (and inflamed, hot, itchy, painful, swollen skin) happens with severe sunburns so this seems like an easy possibility. Did you get badly sunburned?
