Fliers should check their driver’s licenses before taking a trip next year.
A federal law taking effect in Jan., known as Real ID, requires all states
to issue licenses with beefed-up security features, such as anticounterfeiting tech,
in order to pass through airport security…a response to the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Twenty-seven states are in compliance, while 19 states have extensions to comply.
Residents of the 19 states can use their current licenses until Oct. 10, 2018.
Four states plus U.S. territories may not have updated licenses ready in time.
People who reside in La., Mich., N.Y., R.I., Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands
will need another government ID, such as a passport, unless an extension is granted.
