We have learned the hard way to treat late July/ early August rain storms with great respect. Engine started, sails down. Other times of the year do not seem to be so bad, but after 2 very scary experiences we choose discretion any time we see clouds approaching. We have never sailed in late August or September, but I suspect we would do the same during these months as well.
For the record this is in a 40 foot monohull with two senior citizens sailing it. The lack of visibility as well as the extreme gusts are not for the faint of heart.
